There's big relief in store for crores of farming families across the country. The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme for the next five years, extending it from 2026-27 to 2030-31. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which cleared a total financial outlay of Rs 3.15 lakh crore — precisely Rs 3,15,614 crore — for this period.

Briefing the media after the meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the extension reflects the government's continued focus on raising farmer incomes and ensuring that financial support reaches them on time.

The Scheme's Structure Stays the Same

The good news is that the core structure of PM-KISAN remains unchanged. Eligible landholding farmer families will continue to receive Rs 6,000 every year, just as before. This amount is paid in three equal installments of Rs 2,000 each, once every four months, transferred directly into beneficiaries' Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

Launched in February 2019, PM-KISAN is considered one of the largest direct benefit transfer schemes in the world. According to the government, more than Rs 4.47 lakh crore has already been disbursed to farmers through 23 installments so far. The most recent one, the 23rd installment, was released on June 20, 2026, benefiting more than 9.44 crore farmers with a total payout of Rs 18,880 crore.

The government has also stated that women farmers have received more than Rs 1.06 lakh crore under the scheme, and nearly one in every four beneficiaries is a woman.

Impact on Farmer Income and Investment

Citing an evaluation by NITI Aayog's Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO), the government says more than 92 percent of beneficiaries used the funds for agricultural activities and farm-related investment. Around 85 percent reported an improvement in agricultural income and reduced dependence on informal credit. The assistance has allowed farmers to invest on time in seeds, fertilisers, irrigation and farm equipment, strengthening the financial stability of rural households.

When Will the 24th Installment Arrive?

Installments under the scheme are typically released in three four-month cycles: April-July, August-November, and December-March. Since the 23rd installment was paid in June 2026, the 24th installment is expected to arrive around October 2026. However, the government has not announced an official date yet, so farmers should rely only on pmkisan.gov.in for confirmation closer to the release.

Three Things to Sort Out Before the Next Installment

To make sure the next payment isn't delayed, farmers need to complete three important checks in advance:

  • Complete e-KYC: e-KYC is mandatory. It can be done via OTP on the PM-KISAN portal or mobile app, through biometric verification at a nearby Common Service Centre, or via face authentication on the mobile app.
  • Verify Aadhaar-bank account linking: Payments are released only into Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts, so this linkage must be accurate.
  • Complete land seeding and verification: Land records need to be verified by the concerned state or Union Territory department.

In cases flagged as suspicious — such as farmers who acquired land after February 1, 2019, or families where multiple members are registered — payments may be held back temporarily until physical verification is completed.

How to Check Your Beneficiary Status

Farmers can check their installment and eligibility status by following these steps:

1. Visit the official website, pmkisan.gov.in.

2. On the homepage, go to the 'Farmers Corner' section and select 'Beneficiary Status' or 'Know Your Status'.

3. Enter your registered mobile number or Aadhaar number.

4. To view the village-wise beneficiary list, select your state, district, sub-district, block and village.

The beneficiary list for the 24th installment has not been released yet and will be updated on the portal a few days before the payment is disbursed.

Who Isn't Eligible for the Scheme

PM-KISAN benefits are meant only for eligible landholding farmer families. Income-tax payers, most serving and retired government employees, and people in higher income categories are excluded from the scheme. The complete exclusion list is available on the official portal, where farmers can check their eligibility themselves.

Conclusion

The extension of PM-KISAN till 2030-31, backed by a Rs 3.15 lakh crore outlay, signals that the government intends to keep farmer income support as a priority in the years ahead. While the exact date for the 24th installment hasn't been announced yet, farmers still have time to get their e-KYC, Aadhaar-bank linking and land records in order. Those who complete these three steps now won't have to worry about delays when the next installment is released.
